Does My Client Have to Approve Recurring Payments Each Time?

Does my client have to approve their ongoing payment each time? Of all the questions we receive, this is one we hear most often. The simple answer is a resounding, “NO!”

Once your client is set up on a recurring subscription, they only need to approve their subscription one time. Going forward, their payment will automatically be deducted from their account each billing cycle.

For example, if you begin a recurring monthly payment of $250 with a start date of September 1st, your client will be prompted to approve this subscription. Once approved, they’ll be billed the $250.00 on September 1st and then again on October 1st, November 1st, etc., until their subscription ends or is canceled.

Also, keep in mind for subscriptions, even if the client were to activate their subscription on August 15th, their first payment would not be drawn from their account until the due date of September 1st. (This is a bit different than one-time invoices that are paid automatically.)

Are there any other times a client will need to approve a payment?

There are a few instances where clients will need to approve payments:

Client Notifications

By default, clients are notified 7 days before their payment is deducted from their billing account. You can change this default setting by going to Account Settings > Email & Notifications > Client Notifications > Recurring Debit Reminder.

If you toggle this setting off, your clients will NOT automatically receive these notifications. If they still wish to receive withdrawal notifications, they can turn this on within their client portal at Account Settings > Email & Notifications > Recurring Payment Receipts.

Clients will also receive notifications once the payment has processed. They also have the ability to turn these off within their Email & Notifications settings on their client profile.
